Esmond Wright was born on 5th November 1915 in Newcastle, England. He later went on to study an MA at the University of Virginia, winning a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in 1938. He graduated with his MA in 1940 , and it was presented to him by President Franklin Roosevelt himself. He then went into the army as a private and began lecturing troops on political issues and left the army after the war as a lieutenant colonel.
